Dr. Fryer is interested in understanding the genetic
basis for differentiation of neural stem cells to distinct phenotypes,
including dopaminergic neurons known to succumb to degeneration
in patients with Parkinson's disease. Once defining the role of
genes important in driving differentiation, he is interested in
modifying these cells via gene therapy type approaches to predispose
the cells to become dopamine-producing neurons upon transplantation
into Parkinson's Disease patients.
