The goal of his project is to create a compendium
of genomic information to be mined for the development of new therapeutics.
For this purpose, he and Dr. Steven Gullans have developed an assay
for cell death in neuroblastoma cells in tissue culture. As the
source of oxidative damage, they have formulated a 96-well assay
system utilizing hydrogen peroxide as the oxidative and toxic agent.
As a means to determining which genes are involved in conferring
cell survival under neurotoxic conditions, Dr. Sarang is expanding
his work from cell culture to animal models for Parkinson's Disease
and ALS.
