Name: Satinder Sarang, Ph.D.

Dr. Satinder Sarang is a postdoctoral researcher with our lab at the Center for Neurological Diseases (CND) and Lab of Drug Discovery in Neurodegeneration (LDDN). He brings to our group his expertise in pharmacology, toxicology, biochemistry and enzymatic assay development. Prior to joining our group, he worked on identifying glycine and GABA A receptor subunits and calcium uptake and calpain activation.

His research focus is on molecular and pharmacological mechanism of neuroprotection. The goal of his project is to create a compendium of genomic information to be mined for the development of new therapeutics. For this purpose, he and Dr. Steven Gullans have developed an assay for cell death in neuroblastoma cells in tissue culture. As the source of oxidative damage, they have formulated a 96-well assay system utilizing hydrogen peroxide as the oxidative and toxic agent. As a means to determining which genes are involved in conferring cell survival under neurotoxic conditions, Dr. Sarang is expanding his work from cell culture to animal models for Parkinson's Disease and ALS.

Dr. Sarang is joined by Rudolphe Cadet and Andrew Valeras who have been invaluable in their technical support in maintaining cell cultures and carrying out an innumerable number of high throughput assays to titrate and determine the degree of oxidative injury and drug-induced recovery.
